Allotments. The late Dr. John Farrer agreed to an area of estate land on Cross Haw Lane being transformed into allotments for the use of villagers in Clapham. Restoration work was carried out and six allotments created. The Allotment Project still exists although the allotments have moved to another area of land. The allotment holders have now formed a separate group linked to the Village Hall Committee.
Domestic Energy Audit. A thermal-imaging camera was bought with a grant from ……As well as indicating overall energy efficiency thermal imaging showed the effectiveness of different energy devices. This camera is available to borrow from Jill
Swift Project. The group secured funding from The Yorkshire Dales National Park via the Dry Rigg Quarry Fund for the installation of Swift boxes on local buildings in an attempt to attract the birds back into the area. Swift callers were also made available. This is a recent initiative and it may take a little while for the Swifts to safely return.
Recycling of Used Medication packs: The group has been investigating and participating in various schemes accepting and recycling used medication packs. These blister packs are usually made of foil and plastic so cannot currently be recycled via the Council’s collections. After identifying a Yorkshire company MY Group we currently have 2 boxes funded by the Farrer Family Trust and given a home by Paul Pedals of Clapham.
Give and Take. ‘Give and Take’ events emerged from the original Waste Reduction Group. Held every other year ‘Give and Take’ works on a simple idea to reduce the number of items being taken to household waste. Instead, unwanted items were taken to the village hall where they were put on display for others to come and take away. without charge. These events have continued over a number of years with the last one in 2025.
